Virginia native William Haines won a talent contest in 1922 and hit the road to Hollywood, where his adeptness at acting later helped him nail memorable presentations to his design clients, many of whom were actors themselves. While starring in films alongside the likes of Old Hollywood legends like Joan Crawford, Marion Davies and Constance Bennett, he also opened an antiques shop not far from the soundstages where he was making his living as an actor. Over time, his celeb pals began asking for his counsel in redecorating their homes, and he became known for literally lightening their nests by stripping their homes of dark, drab décor and updating it with airy modernity. Today, his designs recall a 1950’s pure modernism in whites and bright jewel tones. Pieces begin at $5000.
